Blooming amid the Pollen

It rained almost all weekend, and we are so thankful. There is so much pollen everywhere. It needed to be washed off. Like everything else, the pollen came late this year. In our area it coats everything with a thick yellow-green powder. Many ( non-local) people report a forest fire when the clouds of pollen start to blow. It's that thick.
Before the rain started Saturday, I took some photos of what is blooming in the yard.
Bleeding Hearts

Chives
Bearded Iris (And strawberries behind that!)
Not Sure what this is - it gets black pods. A garden sharing gift!

Cat Mint - Blooming in spite of the fact that three cats roll in it daily!
Clematis

Periwinkle

Bridal Veil (?)

Lily of the Valley

Lilacs

Azaleas
Coral Bell

Rhododendrons

Monday Munchies - What we are eating from the Potager, May 20

The spinach is loving this cold spring we are having. I'm harvesting it twice a week.
The Asparagus is still being harvested. It's slowing down.

We've had our first turnips. Not enough to do anything with on it's own, so they were cut up and roasted with the asparagus - yummy!
We are harvesting three types of radishes now. The long carrot-like ones are Salad Rose - I love these radishes.
The freckles lettuce and pak choi is just getting started. Also one lone swiss chard plant.
I had to replant the swiss chard. They "failed to thrive".
The Arugula is still plentiful and delicious.
Of course the herbs are all being harvested, except for the basil which is not taking off in this cold weather.

{Potting} Shed

It's a bit damp out today, and the chores I've been doing are mundane, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to show off our shed!
Our shed is over 30 years old, it was by no means new when we bought the house 30 years ago. It was not made by someone skilled in carpentry. I think the previous owner just used whatever he could get free from his job at the racetrack. My husband has tried to fix the horrible flat roof many times, but it had gotten to the point that no matter what he did, the roof leaked. There was so much rotted wood on the shed, the window was broken, there were critters living under it and in it. It was sagging, damp and cluttered -  a place I would go in to grab a tool while making as much noise as I could to scare the squirrels and other creatures away, and leave as quickly as possible!

You can see how rotted the wood was. We discussed tearing it down and rebuilding it. But the shed was not built according to local code and is too close to the property next door to us, so we would have to relocate it - like in the middle of our driveway.
I tried to convince hubby to tear our old one down and replace it the next day with this lovely shed I saw at the garden show.  If we did it fast enough the town would never notice, right?
But it was a bit expensive for us at this time, and hubby didn't like it. Even though it has a separate potting shed in it with it's own door!
I seriously could live in this shed - it is so dreamy. It even has a storage loft! But Hubby nixed the new shed idea. He decided to fix up our old shed.. and I whined about not having my own potting shed. Because I do that sometimes.
Annoying, I know.
He changed the pitch of the roof, put on a tin roof, replaced the window with a smaller one and replaced all of the rotting wood. He also lifted the shed where it was crooked and straightened the whole thing out. He also cut down a few trees that were leaning against the shed.
We repainted it (I say we - I painted the red one day, Hubby painted everything else over three weekends.) It looks cute, right?
But the best part was the surprise hubby added inside!
My very own potting shed corner! It may not have it's own entrance, but hubby arranged everything so it is easy to walk into. I can find everything and I can work on the bench while looking out the window. I am so happy!
I still need to decorate it a bit, but I love my new area! And while throwing out the clutter in the shed, we found this:
I think it held bits or something similar at one time. It is perfect for holding seed packages. I love rusty old things.
That old galvanized bucket I got from my Dad last year holds my small gardening tools and is easy to carry to the garden.
So thanks to Hubby's talent, our old shed should serve us until our old age, I have my potting shed, and we don't have to worry about permits or code enforcers. Life is good!

Friday...Ahhh

Is there any thing better than Friday after work shared with a glass of wine, some guitar music and two cats in the garden while sitting on Adirondack Chairs next to sweet smelling lilacs? Oh, I don't think so!

Frost Warning!

The average last frost date is an average, meaning that the frost can occur before or after that date. On the news last night they gave a frost warning for our area. I grabbed a bunch of sheets and covered the tender vegetables in the garden.
It looked like a ghost garden! A frost warning means that the predicted temperature is expected to fall to 36 degrees or lower. It was expected to be near freezing just before dawn. Sheets will protect plants from frost. The frost will go on the sheets rather than the plants. Saving old sheets is not hoarding if you are a gardener!
However, I do not have enough old sheets. So I improvised with some homemade Cloches.
These are protecting my okra seedlings.
I came downstairs at 6:00 AM, after sunrise, and the thermometer was below freezing.
There was also frost on the roof.
I'm glad I listened to the weatherman's advice!
All the plants survived! We even sheltered a little spider under one of sheets!
All we need now is some seasonal weather to get these plants growing!

Rainy Saturday Plans and Surprises

The forecast is for rain today, so I have some wedding things to take care of. While I was buying stamps for the invitations, I found these stamps for sale:
I love them! (Too bad I pay my bills online! But they are forever stamps!)I love finding little surprises like that. And like this:
I went out to the compost pile and found that the Kale I had pulled out before planting last week had flowered in the compost pile. I think the flowers are lovely.
While I am out running wedding errands, I have to pick up a new Chili pepper plant. The one I transplanted didn't survive.  Going to a garden center the day before Mother's Day is not a thing I usually do! But I so enjoyed having the dried chilis from my mistakenly purchased cayenne pepper last year, that I really want another one!
Tomorrow all my kids will be here to visit me, so the garden will not be worked in. I hope you all have a very happy Mother's Day!
